ANITA | mother | nurse
Anita was a nurse long before she was licensed to practice. Her first patient was her mother, and as a child, Anita would administer ice packs for her tension headaches and hot tea during flu season. "I've always been a people person," she says. "I don't like to see people in pain."
Then one day, she learned that nursing required much more than tenderness. She would have to take courses in math and science...and the mere thought required ice packs for her own temples. So during high school, she took a part-time job as a medical records clerk. She continued the position while taking college courses after high school graduation.
Life's challenges have pushed Anita to reach her potential. Today, ten years later, she is a registered nurse with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. She has successfully completed those math and science courses, as well as all of her clinical practicums, while juggling work, classes, and family.
For her achievements, she says she is indebted to her parents who took on more than they bargained for when she moved home with two small children. And she is forever grateful to the Health Careers Foundation for financing the education that has brought her childhood dream to fruition.
